Think about an idea in your head. Without the world surrounding you, those ideas would never have a chance to originate. The language you know, your opinions on an important topic, and what you decide to wear to class are all, at some point, decided due to your influences and surroundings throughout your life. Because we, as social humans, cannot escape interaction, we are all victims of captivity because of our society.
With this project, I wanted to explore the different ideas of captivity that can be found in many of the characters we have read about over the semester. Often when people think of captivity, they will think of a character that is a slave, or a character being locked away or even held hostage. Captivity can obviously be seen in a character like a slave, but I wanted my project to challenge the reader to think beyond the obvious idea of physical containment when they think of captivity. I have chosen four characters that I feel each represent a very different idea of what captivity can mean. Whether it be physical abuse, or mental standards that a society expects, each character has their own story of captivity.
